*We may have found the Census Records from 1870 that list Florence Johnson, our family matriarch, at eight years old. Did you know that she had a little brother named...Bogan?

Florence Wallace Johnson (Age 8)

The 1870 Census Record shows a black family living in Albany (Dougherty County), Georgia on June 22. In the household, the census indicates that the family occupation is farming, and the members include: Geo (or Joe/Jack) Hilliard with his wife, Sallie. The children range in age from two to fifteen. In order, the children are Maria, Matthew, Voyage, Florence, Bogan, Hilliard, and Hattie. The names Bogan and Hattie have been identified by current family members. Aunt Hattie was a short, stout woman, who “never” married. As we all know, Bogan is the name of the land, which we call home. Florence bought this land of 650 acres, and it is called Bogan. There must be a story there…
